Paint Party Friday: An old WIP that needs help

Here is a half finished painting from over a year ago. It's mixed media though right now it's basically just torn up book pages with a painted lady (acrylic) over top. It was never finished and she has sat in my office/art room looking sad for ages. And now I have to finish the painting since my sister claimed it and I want to give it to her when (if) she comes in a few weeks for the holiday weekend.

Any suggestions? Text? Quotes? I was thinking of adding mixed media and/or painted flowers throughout her hair and then maybe a found poetry style quote in the blue area. Something like that. I don't know if more text is a good idea though. Sometimes text ruins an otherwise decent painting.

This is my first Paint Party Friday post. I'm usually working on something or other so sounds like a good weekly group to join in on.

  3. She looks pretty good so far but how to fill the blue bit? I would probably do a coating of gesso or similar and scratch some lines into it to give 3 dimensionality and liveliness. Just add some painted lines to show energy radiating from the character maybe a bit like this but not quite so graphic http://www.redbubble.com/people/blythart/works/6910085-330-floral-manga-girl-dave-edwards-mixed-media-2011 Happy PPF!!

  4. She's gorgeous so far. I'd add some texture, and would base that on your sister. What shapes, flowers call to your sister? Perhaps those could be subtly included?
I'm not much help but look forward to seeing the finished piece.

  9. welcome to ppf! this is just a few suggestions from my perspective. i love the orange and blue combination. that's always a winner combo. since the hair and face have the same orange tone, it'd probably be interesting to do a bit of work on either, just to make it come out as two elements rather than one. the hair is fine as it is. sometimes too many embellishments sort of ruin the focus. maybe add some hues on the face ... a bit of white on high points would make the face come out and become the focus. enjoy painting! alpha shanahan 34

  11. Think of a word....something you are feeling lately then look up a quote for that word...it will intuitively come to you.... google search the images section of that word quote...maybe that will also inspire you to finish in your own intuitive way!! Beautiful so far!

  13. Welcome to ppf! I think she's fantastic just as she is, I can see why your sister claimed her. If you do add to her, I'm sure she'll look great too!

  16. A bird is a good idea. I was trying to think what you could do with the hair and thought of a packed steam-type city with her hair mixing with the steam out of some silos. On the other hand, I really love the face and maybe you don't want to compete with it too much. An uplifting quote, but not too large, would be nice, maybe with some birds flying off... Too many options!

  18. such a gorgeous face with whimsical hair
i like your idea of flowers
    maybe some butterflies too?
I understand about text... script, i have such a hard time with that
    but sometimes it is wonderful
if you could find the right words to make it meaningful for your sister, or something between the two of you?
I hope you share the finished piece with us!

  19. I love her so far, with the print peeking through her wild hair. As for words or not … your call. You'll know when you reach that phase!

  20. I love her, especially the oj and blue. Your Paint Party mention gave me an idea about unfinished works... thinking that it might be fun and interesting to do a paint and pass with unfinished/old pieces that we're either stuck on or lost interest in. I've never done one (and don't feel particularly ready to lol) but it popped into my head so I thought I'd just ramble it on out ;P
